Did you know that Walt Disney invented storyboarding in 1928?
And now, not only is it a standard planning tool in the film industry, but it
has also taken hold in user-centered interface design and, in some cases, in
document design. A few years ago, an industrial-design colleague at
Hewlett-Packard related his experiences learning formal storyboarding as a tool
to facilitate strategic planning and product design sessions. His skill as an
artist didn't hurt, but he also had a tremendous tool for working with teams and
capturing ideas in a creative way.
The Phoenix Creative Planning Center is a leader in
StoryBoarding (their spelling) research, development, and implementation. Their
15th annual conference on International Planning Center Methods is scheduled for
May 4 and 5, 2001, in Phoenix, Arizona. Conference speakers include people
formerly with Disney and the entertainment industry who are now using the
storyboarding techniques to create and exchange information captured during a
meeting. For more information call 602-997-6966. You might also inquire about
the workshops to learn the techniques. The conference sounds a bit "different"
from our standard technical conferences but very interesting.
