Program announcement by JoAnn Hackos:
I have been talking to the members of the Center for
Information-Development Management (CIDM) Advisory Council
about themes for the Best Practices 2001 conference. Many of
the discussions have centered on Strategic Planning and the
importance of setting goals and putting a plan in place to
achieve them. Given the state of the economy, managers are also
concerned about making effective business cases, managing
through metrics, and handling staff members effectively.
As a result of these talks, the Best Practices 2001 conference
will focus on our theme, The Balanced Scorecard (Kaplan and
Horton, 1996). The Balanced Scorecard, a book I reviewed in the
February 2001 issue of the Best Practices newsletter, provides
a unifying theme for the conference. With it, we will discuss
strategic planning, metrics, staff resources, distributed staff
and telecommuting, customer satisfaction, and process
improvement.
I am seeking your input for a session on financial metrics.

Searching for the Numbers
What is the value added by developing outstanding information?
How does your organization contribute to the bottom line? How
do you prove that your staff are reducing costs and increasing
their productivity?
We're looking for a few good numbers to display prominently at
the October 2001 Best Practices conference. In keeping with our
Balanced Scorecard theme, we're planning a full session on
financial measures. The highlight will be a Poster Session on
metrics.
If you've never seen a Poster Session before, think high-school
science fair. Create a poster and a handout on your best metric
and be on hand to discuss your successes with your management
colleagues from around the world.
Please submit a one-page description of your metric and your
poster idea to .
Send me your ideas by June 25, and we'll get back to you
quickly about a possible role in the poster session.
Remember that two conference registrations are included in CIDM
membership for your department. Now is the time to join—in
time for the upcoming third annual conference!
