Based on the survey data regarding professional development preferences, technical communicators in our small sample prioritize structured learning environments that offer flexibility and direct engagement.

Results indicate a significant preference for both self-paced online courses and live workshops or webinars, with each category capturing 40% of the responses. This parity suggests that while practitioners value the convenience of on-demand tutorials, there remains a strong demand for the real-time interaction and expert guidance found in live sessions. Interestingly, on-the-job learning and mentorship accounted for 20% of responses because while peer-to-peer mentorship and “learning by doing” have traditionally been the bedrock of professional growth, this lower showing challenges that foundational belief. Conference sessions saw no selection in this small sample, highlighting a current lean toward focused, task-oriented educational formats over broader networking-based learning. For information development managers, these insights highlight three key points: complexity outpacing internal expertise, a need for safe learning spaces, and the shortage of ‘in house experts” as senior team members get promoted.
